In building the HERO Method, I was first attracted by that greatest of all job hunting books of all time, the Wizard of Oz.
For those unfamiliar with the story, the Wizard only tells the other main characters that they have the skills to meet their goals inside of themselves. You have brains, heart and courage for the hunt ahead and only need to be able to express it in the language the employer can understand.
But in the voyage to meet with the Wizard, the heros of our book fall asleep to the scent of poppies laid in front of them by the Wicked Witch of the West .
Folks, like the tin man and lion, you too can fall to the scent of something more interesting than the grind of job hunting. Especially this time of year, there is always something more interesting to do...and they won't hire me this time of year anyway...
How to stay focused?
Make yourself a bulls-eye target with goals for each level of the target. Goals like number of resumes to give away weekly, number of new contacts made, employers actually met.. Make one for thanking your references, too..
Make that target and put in markers each week that you hit your target.
YOU are out there hitting your target while the other job hunters are taking the time off, sleeping with the poppies.
